Get Grilling – Tips & Tricks for Healthy Grilling on the VLCD

August 17, 2018 at 7:43 AM

Grilling season is upon us, but if you are on the Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD),you may think that you can no longer enjoy one of your favorite parts of the summer. We have some good news for you: While you can’t have a fatty burger slathered with calorie-laden barbecue sauce, you can still enjoy a delicious, satisfying barbecued meal that fits within your diet restrictions.

Step 1: Choose Lean Meat

Grilling itself is not the unhealthy part—it’s the meat that is being grilled. Instead of reaching for the ribs or the fatty burger, opt for leaner meats, like chicken, veggie burgers, or a bison burger. You will still enjoy the fresh-grilled, juicy taste you crave, but you will save a lot of calories in the process. Additionally, shrimp and fish can be grilled up for an incredible meal.

Step 2: Add in a Healthy Serving of Vegetables

Vegetables are always good, but they are extra tasty when they are grilled. Choose a wide assortment of vegetables to grill up, including asparagus, bell peppers, eggplant, onions, white mushrooms, and green and yellow squash. Once you have your favorites assembled, you can either create veggie skewers to grill up, or you can wrap them in foil and place them right on the grill plate. Just make sure you don’t add any butter or oils to them.

Step 3: Slather in a Healthy Marinade

The zero calorie dressings and sauces from Walden Farms are a perfect way to add flavor to your grilled food without adding on calories. They are available in many different varieties—including a sesame ginger dressing, chipotle ranch, and honey barbecue or spicy barbecue—so whatever flavor your mouth is watering for, you can create it. You can either marinade the meats and veggies in the sauces for several hours(orovernight) so they really soak up the flavor, or you can add them on after the fact for the perfect finishing touch.

Step 4: Enjoy All Season Long

Now all that’s left is to savor every bite of your meal. When you are on the VLCD, a helpful tip is to take small bites and eat slowly. Because your brain doesn’t immediately register that your stomach is full, you may be at risk of eating more than your body needs. If you focus on slowing down and enjoying every bite, your hormones will have time to properly communicate to your brain and you can enjoy the flavor much longer without consuming any extra calories.
